Understanding Peace and Friendship
“Peace must begin with each one of us. Through quiet and serious reflection on its meaning, new and creative ways can be found to foster understanding, friendships and co-operation amongst all peoples”
Javier Perez de Cuellar,
Former Secretary-General of the United Nations,
Peace begins with each one of us. Learning to be at peace within ourselves promotes a positive self-concept and outlook on life and helps in maintaining peaceful relations with others. Peace is not the only the absence of war – nor is it passive state. Rather it is an active and non-violent way of relating to people and the living world. It is about nurturing understanding and acceptance between all people.
Educational settings provide the ideal environment for children to learn and practice the skills needed to have peaceful relationships with others. Successful development and implementation of these skills when young will increase the likelihood of peace in the wider world in the future.
Peace and friendship are at the heart of the school linking project. Children should feel they are forging new friendships as they share details about their lives, learn from each other and participate in joint projects.
The following activities are geared to help children learn more about each other and discover similarities and differences as well as making a gesture of friendship.
